Why we know this works!
We love this brush for kids because as occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) we know the two minute toothbrushing standard assumes skills a lot of children simply do not have yet. Brushing independently requires bilateral coordination, motor planning to sequence the quadrants, proprioceptive awareness of how hard to press, and the sustained attention to keep going after the interesting part is over. What actually happens when a child cannot do all four? They brush the front teeth for ten seconds and call it done, and the molars where decay starts never get touched. A mouthguard style brush removes the sequencing and the pressure grading entirely, which means a child who could not brush effectively can now do it themselves.
We especially like this for kids with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism, and motor planning difficulty, and for sensory sensitive kids for whom a small vibrating head scraping individual teeth is genuinely painful. The full arch contact is a different sensory experience, more deep pressure than point pressure, which many sensory seeking and sensory avoiding kids tolerate far better. Two boundaries worth naming: this is not a substitute for adult supervision or for a dentist, and children still need help with flossing. Also expect a short adjustment period, because the mouthguard shape feels strange at first. If the barrier is really the toothpaste texture rather than the brushing, change the paste before you change the brush. For teens and adults, the full size SymplBrush uses the same design.
