Why We Care

Everywhere we've worked as occupational therapists we kept running into the same problem: inability to connect the dots to get people the equipment they needed, installed and setup in a timely manner - primarily because the things we know work, aren't covered by health insurance

We developed AskSAMIE to make the information and solutions readily available. But not everyone is able to afford to pay for it out of pocket - and frankly we hate that!

We've raised $72,500 as of Quarter 2 2025 thanks to your support!

We set out to improve health outcomes and quality of life - and we are!

Outcomes at a Glance

Decreased Fear of Falling

Research shows that increased fear of falling is strongly correlated with higher actual fall risk, making it a critical target for prevention efforts (Scheffer et al., 2008.)

Only 5% of participants reported any fear of falling six months post-installation, as measured by the Fall Efficacy Scale.

Decreased Rehospitalization

Among patients with congestive heart failure, nearly 50% are readmitted to the hospital within six months following discharge. (Chamberlain et al, 2018). 33% of our grantees reported being hospitalized within the 6 months prior to our program.

At six months post-installation only 8% reported a visit to the hospital or urgent care, all of which due only to acute illnesses like the flu rather than exacerbations of chronic illness.

Improved Quality of Life

Quality of life is a powerful predictor of health outcomes—lower health-related quality of life scores are associated with significantly higher risks of hospitalization and death among older adults. (Brown, DS et. al., 2015)

67% of our participants reported increased quality of life after receiving adaptive equipment and services, reflecting meaningful improvements across physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains of quality of life.

How We Work with Partners

  • Mission-aligned supporters such as Health Forward Foundation and the Black Community Fund channel resources that advance their own health-equity goals.  The Community Capital fund serves as our Fiscal Sponsor, which safeguards and disburses these grant dollars.
  • In parallel, AskSAMIE reinvests 10% of the profits of every sale into the Community Grant Project, creating a self-sustaining loop that expands our impact with each purchase.
