Carrying a laundry basket up or down the stairs takes away the one thing that keeps you steady: a free hand. This hands-free laundry backpack moves the load onto your back, so one hand can hold the handrail and the other can hold your cane. The padded shoulder straps and chest buckle keep the weight close to your body and centered, which is far easier on your balance than a basket held out in front of you, blocking your view of the steps.

At home it works as a hamper first. The structured square base stands up on its own in the bedroom or closet, so you can drop clothes in all week without holding it open. When laundry day comes, cinch the drawstring top, zip the front, and put it on. Going down, there is no need to carry it at all: once it is closed, let it slide or toss it down to a clear, empty landing, then walk down with both hands free. At the washer, the front-opening door and removable inner bag make it easy to unload without bending deep into a basket.

This is the Large size: 24 x 13 x 13 inches with a 6 inch drawstring extension, about 90 liters, and it weighs under 3 pounds empty. Mesh side pockets hold detergent, a front zip pocket holds dryer sheets or quarters, and a hidden back pocket keeps your phone close in case you need to call for help. A reflective strip adds visibility, and the whole bag folds flat when you are not using it.

Falls are the leading cause of injury for adults age 65 and older, according to the CDC's older adult falls data, and stairs are where carrying something in both hands matters most. If you use a cane, our guide to the types of canes and which one is right for you can help you choose the most stable one for stairs. For heavier loads on one floor, pair it with our Laundry Utility Cart.

Ideal for older adults, people who use a cane or have balance or mobility challenges, anyone recovering from surgery, and caregivers who want laundry day to stop being the riskiest chore in the house.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do you carry laundry up and down stairs safely? Wear it, do not hold it. A laundry backpack keeps one hand free for the handrail and the other for a cane, and keeps your view of the steps clear. Going down, close the bag and let it slide or toss it to a clear landing first, then walk down with both hands free.

Q: What is the easiest way to carry laundry upstairs? Put it on your back in a bag that closes. Shoulder straps and a chest buckle hold the weight close and centered, so it is easier on your balance and your back than a basket held out in front of your body. Fill it about halfway for stairs and make two trips instead of one heavy one.

Q: What is the best laundry basket for elderly adults? The best one is the one that leaves your hands free. For homes with stairs, a backpack hamper that stands up in the bedroom is safest because you never carry it in your arms. For one-level homes or very heavy loads, a rolling option like our Laundry Utility Cart takes the weight off your body completely.

Q: Is there a laundry backpack that stands up on its own? Yes. This one has a structured square base and frame that keeps it upright even when empty, so it works as a hamper in your bedroom or closet. Drop clothes in all week, then cinch the top and carry it when it is time to wash.

Q: Can I use a laundry backpack with a cane or walker? With a cane, yes: it is designed for exactly that, so one hand holds the cane and the other holds the rail. A walker needs both hands, so do not climb stairs with a walker and a backpack; use the bag on one level, or talk with an occupational therapist about a safer setup. Our guide to the types of canes explains which canes are most stable on stairs.

Q: Is it safe to throw a laundry bag down the stairs? Yes, when it is closed and the path is clear. Cinch the drawstring and buckle the top strap so nothing spills, make sure no one is on the stairs or the landing, and keep the landing free of anything you could trip over when you reach the bottom.

Q: How much laundry does a laundry backpack hold? This Large size holds about 90 liters, roughly 3 loads, in a 24 x 13 x 13 inch body that extends 6 more inches at the top. You do not have to fill it all the way: for stairs, a half-full bag is easier to balance.

Q: Why are stairs so risky when carrying laundry? Because it takes away your hands and your view of your feet. Falls are the leading cause of injury for adults 65 and older according to the CDC, and holding a load in both arms means you cannot catch yourself on the rail if you misstep.

Why we know this works!

We love this laundry backpack because as occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) because this is one of the tasks that has always been easy but as soon as mobility changes it becomes risky. A basket held in both arms takes away your handrail, your cane, and your view of your feet, all at the exact moment you are on the stairs. This significantly impacts your ability to maintain your balance. Which maybe wasn't a big deal before, but if you've had a change in your balance or level of ability can really make your body work harder to keep you upright. We especially like that this one stands up on its own. Because the square base holds its shape, it lives in the bedroom as a hamper, so you never have to transfer clothes from a basket into a bag, and the front door lets you set it on top of the dryer and unload in into the washer without bending deep into a basket. That makes it a strong fit for people who use a cane, have hip or knee pain, are recovering from surgery, or are managing Parkinson's or neuropathy. Remember that a backpack makes the carry safer but we recommend you fill it halfway a sa full load could shift your balance backward. Pair it with Anti Slip Stair Treads on the steps and the Laundry Utility Cart for longer trips on one level.
