Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does the Trapeze Freestanding work?

A: The Trapeze Freestanding works by providing a secure overhead bar that individuals can grasp to lift themselves up when changing positions in bed or transferring in and out of bed. The freestanding design features a stable base that fits between the bed and the floor, requiring no attachment to the bed frame or wall. Users simply reach up and grip the trapeze bar to pull themselves into a sitting position, reposition themselves in bed, or assist with transfers. The adjustable height allows customization for different bed heights and user needs.

Q: What is a freestanding bed trapeze bar?

A: A freestanding bed trapeze bar is a mobility assistance device that stands independently next to or over a bed without requiring attachment to the bed frame, headboard, or wall. This trapeze features a sturdy base with outriggers that provide stability, an adjustable vertical pole, and an overhead boom with a triangular handle (trapeze bar) that users can grip for support. It's ideal for individuals who need help repositioning in bed, sitting up, or transferring but cannot install a wall-mounted or bed-attached system.

Q: Who should use a freestanding trapeze bar?

A: A freestanding trapeze bar is beneficial for individuals with limited mobility, those recovering from surgery or injury, seniors who need assistance getting in and out of bed, people with chronic conditions affecting strength or balance, and anyone who requires support for bed repositioning. It's particularly useful for those who want to maintain independence in bed mobility without relying solely on caregiver assistance. The device supports up to 225 lbs. safe working load.

Q: Does the Trapeze Freestanding require installation or tools?

A: No, the Trapeze Freestanding features easy, tool-free setup that takes only 5-10 minutes with no tools needed. The freestanding design means it doesn't require drilling, mounting, or permanent installation to walls or bed frames. Simply position the base under and beside the bed, adjust the height as needed, and it's ready to use. This makes it ideal for rental properties, temporary needs, or situations where permanent installation isn't possible.

Q: What beds is the Trapeze Freestanding compatible with?

A: The Trapeze Freestanding is designed for use with Panacea 3000 series beds and features a powdercoat finish that matches those bed frame colors. However, it works with any bed that has sufficient space between the bed and the floor to accommodate the base. The trapeze has a 37.5-inch inside base clearance, 63-inch boom clearance, and 50-inch outrigger interference on the floor, so you'll need to ensure your bed and room dimensions can accommodate these measurements.

Q: What is the weight capacity of the freestanding trapeze?

A: The Trapeze Freestanding has a safe working load of 225 lbs. The safe working load refers to the amount of patient weight that is supportable by the trapeze when being used to lift, reposition, or transfer. This capacity ensures safe use for most individuals who need mobility assistance in bed.

Q: Can the trapeze bar be adjusted for different positions?

A: Yes, the Trapeze Freestanding offers multiple adjustment options. The height is adjustable to accommodate different bed heights and user preferences, and the assist handle can move along the length of the boom for various positioning needs. This flexibility allows you to customize the trapeze placement for optimal reach and comfort, whether you're repositioning in bed, sitting up, or transferring out of bed.

Q: Is the freestanding trapeze easy to move or relocate?

A: Yes, the Trapeze Freestanding includes wheels on the back of the base for easier mobility. To move the trapeze, simply tilt it backwards and roll it to the desired location. This feature makes it convenient to reposition the trapeze for cleaning, room rearrangement, or moving it between different beds or rooms as needed, while still maintaining stability during use.

Why we know this works!

We love this freestanding trapeze because as occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) we see how much people can still do with their arms even when their legs stop helping in bed. Who can safely use a bed trapeze? Someone who can grip, pull with their arms, and follow directions: you reach up, grab the handle, and lift yourself to reposition, sit up, or start a transfer. Nothing bolts to your bed, setup takes 5 to 10 minutes with no tools, and the handle adjusts in height and slides along the boom to sit right where you need it. It is especially useful for people with spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, or leg weakness after surgery who still have solid arm strength. Mind the 225 pound safe working load, and if pulling with the arms is not realistic, a Bed Rail for Seniors supports rolling and standing instead.
