How to Travel with a Wheelchair | Aging in Place Solutions

Traveling is full of adventure and new experiences, these don't have to end if you find you or your loved one now needs to take a wheelchair with them. It may take a little more planning but for traveling - it's worth it!

 

How do we board an airplane with a wheelchair?

Traveling by air with a wheelchair is totally do-able! There are some great YouTubers that share how they handle the airport. Watch a few so you can make a plan and go!

The main thing is that it will require some extra time and some help from the personnel at the airport. Once you book a ticket,  call the airline and let them know what your needs are so they can explain their procedures to you and ensure you are prepared. The process to board the plane will likely take a little longer than normal as well. The important thing to remember is to ask for help from the staff as you need. How do I find an accessible hotel?

Most hotel chains offer accessible rooms, but not all rooms are the same. When booking a hotel room try to specific with what you need. For example, if you know a need a walk-in shower versus a tub shower, let the hotel know. If you are not sure what to look for in a hotel room, watch this video for some tips.

 

Can you go on a cruise with a wheelchair?

If you thought you couldn't go on a cruise because you are in a wheelchair, think again. Cruise ships are ADA compliant, however, they have a limited number of wheelchairs and accessible rooms. Planning ahead will ensure you are able to book an accessible room on the ship and will allow them to plan for your needs. Find a room!
